A proposal on generating revenue through construction of toilets at prominent and busy junctions in the city by a private firm, which is in the business of finding platforms for advertisements, was shot down by the State Cabinet on Saturday.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) forwarded the proposal of the private advertisement firm – SAS Advertisers – to the State Cabinet for construction of 30 toilets on PPP model.

The private firm identified busy and prominent circles/junctions such as Trinity Circle, Mekri Circle, M.G. Road (near Utility Building), Sankey Road junction, Bannerghatta Road in front of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Race Course Road, and Kamaraja Road for construction of toilets.

SAS Advertisers has proposed to construct each toilet at a cost of Rs. 50,000

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting that the Cabinet, which discussed the proposal in detail, rejected it outright citing that the revenue generating model would benefit only the private advertisement firm and not the BBMP, which is starved of funds. The Cabinet directed BBMP to identify places for construction of toilets in the city and auction them, the Minister added.

The city has 500 public toilets, many of which are not in working condition. The city needs at least 15,000 toilets.
