The subject meeting of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council, which was convened on Tuesday to discuss long-pending road works and other civil works, has been cancelled.
The meeting was to take a call on the 165 subjects pending before the 12 different standing committees for months. The term of the standing committees and that of incumbent Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy and Deputy Mayor L. Srinivas ended in April 2013. The subjects have remained pending before the committees since March, when the subject meeting was last held.
BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan had written to the State government seeking its approval to hold the subject meeting. However, with the government yet to respond to his request, he directed the council section to cancel the meeting. The letter issued by the council section states that the meeting has been cancelled due to “unavoidable circumstances.”

With the model code of conduct for Assembly elections in force and the pending case challenging the reservation of Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s post in High Court, the meeting could not be convened earlier.
A subject meeting may be held so that the BBMP council can decide on subjects pending before the standing committees for more than two months according to the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, he said.
“The elections to the posts of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and members of 12 standing committees will be held on September 4. The new committees can clear the pending issues soon after being elected. If they do not take a decision soon, the subject meeting will have to be convened,” he said.

Earlier, Opposition Leader M.K. Gunashekar lambasted the BJP, which is the Ruling Party in the BBMP council, for convening the meeting when the government had not permitted it.
