Land should be within 100 km from the city without houses in a five-km radius

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is adopting a multi-pronged strategy to manage solid waste in the city. With the communities living around landfills up in arms, the civic body is looking at alternatives.

The civic body now plans to purchase around 200 acres of land to set up solid waste management facilities for processing garbage scientifically. In an expression of interest, it has stated that the land could be offered to the BBMP either in an outright purchase or on lease for a minimum period of 30 years.

According to the terms and conditions, the land should be within 100 km from the city, but there should be no dwelling units within a five-km radius. Those selling the land should have a clear marketable title over the property and free from all encumbrances. Besides being easily accessible by road, it should also not be the subject matter of any litigation/ attachments.

Senior BBMP officials told

The Hindu that this was apart from the 212 acres that the civic body was getting from the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation. They said the land could be used to dispose of at least construction debris. Some integrated solid waste management projects were already in the pipeline. These projects would be given land based on availability.

BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel said: “Mandur landfill will eventually close and BBMP will have to look for alternative sites. There is need for scientific management and we plan on integrated SWM projects. These lands will be used for these projects,” he said.

He conceded that the BBMP had some offers from some people on the city’s outskirts.
