Nine days before the deadline to end dumping of garbage at Mandur, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) stopped sending waste to landfills there from Friday.
After the deadline was set, the civic body progressively reduced the quantum of waste being sent to Mandur landfills. A few months ago, around 400 trucks carried approximately 1,800 tonnes of garbage to the landfills. This had been brought down to around 70 trucks. Darpan Jain, BBMP’s Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management), told The Hindu that instructions had been issued to not dump any garbage in the landfills at Mandur. “We have been successful in bringing down the quantum of waste going to the landfills, while simultaneously increasing the capacity of processing units,” he said.
BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan said that in around four months, about 85 per cent of Bengaluru’s waste would be processed. “Compared to [civic agencies in] other cities in the country, the BBMP has created the most number of garbage processing units,” he said.
