Academicians, scholars, officials meet to discuss medium of instruction

Various academicians, Kannada scholars and officials of the Education Department have gathered today to discuss State government’s 1994 language policy.

The meeting chaired by Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, Kimmane Ratnakar where Kannada writers such as Chandrashekar Kambar, K.S. Nissar Ahmed, Advocate General, Ravi Varma Kumar as well as Minister for Kannada and Culture, Umashree.

There is mounting pressure on the government to resolve the language policy crisis after Karnataka High Court urged the Education Department to consider application from a school for starting English medium.

Earlier in May, the Supreme Court had quashed the state’s 1994 language policy which states that lower primary classes should be in the regional language or child’s mother tongue.
