Red, blue, green, yellow and even orange... she caught your attention in films such as Austin Powers, The Simpsons, Mr. Bean: the animated series, and of course, Herbie. Thirteen Volkswagen Beetles made a classic countenance here recently, rallying across Bangalore.

A rare opportunity in Bangalore, automobile enthusiasts caught a glimpse of the vintage cars, which reminded one of a bygone era when these super-models symbolised freedom and youthfulness.

“These Beetles hold a special charm that no other car has, be it a Mercedes or a Rolls-Royce. Everybody acknowledges the ‘biggies’, but the Beetle is one car that brings a smile to the faces of all alike, from urchins to the hoity-toity,” said Chitra Shamsundar, one of the co-founders of the Bangalore Beetle Club.

“We have around 30 members and 13 took part in the rally,” she said.

“The objective is to honour Beetle owners who have maintained these old beauties, as well as to keep nostalgia and tradition alive,” said Sandeep Kapoor, Managing Director of Relio Quick India, a marketing company that joined hands with the Bangalore Beetle Club to host the rally.

The rally was flagged off by Kannada actor Prajwal Devraj. Proud owners of the car, that were stationed outside the Public Library near Cubbon Park, drove across Bangalore Central, to Queen’s Statue via Koshy’s Restaurant and finally ended the rally at Palace Grounds.
