South Zone Sport Climbing Competition takes off tomorrow in city

At a time when sport climbing is gaining popularity among the youth, around 150 climbers from the four southern States are expected to vie with each other in the 16th South Zone Sport Climbing Competition at Kanteerava Stadium in the city on October 23 and 24.

The competition is being organised by the General Thimmayya National Academy of Adventure (GETHNAA) in association with South Zone Sport Climbing Committee of Indian Mountaineering Foundation.

Director of Youth Services and Sports Department Shivalingaiah told reporters here on Thursday that the competition is being organised at the International Sports Climbing Wall at the Kanteerava Stadium.

Participants will start reporting to the competition from October 22, and boarding and lodging facilities for them are being provided at the stadium itself.

Lead and speed

The competition, in the climbing discipline of ‘Lead and Speed' will be conducted in three categories — sub-junior, junior for boys and girls aged below 12 years and between 13 and 16 years respectively, and Open Men's and Women's for those aged above 16. Selection of the teams to represent the South Zone at the National Sport Climbing Competition at New Delhi will be made on the basis of the results of the 16th South Zone competition, he said.

A maximum of three climbers in each discipline from each category will be selected from Open Men's and Women's and junior categories.

However, no one from the sub-junior category will be deputed to the national event.

During the last national sport climbing competition held at Gwalior in 2009, South Zone had won the overall championship while Karnataka alone had bagged 23 medals of the total 24 won by the zone.
