The continuous rain in the wake of Cyclone Nilam has hit garbage collection in the city. Mounds of it lay waiting to be cleared by the roadside in many parts, and in some areas, garbage was seen floating in the stagnant rainwater.
Despite the continuous drizzle, pourakarmikas were seen trying to clear as much garbage as possible, braving the inclement weather. However many areas reported no-show by contract pourakarmikas, perhaps due to inclement weather.
A Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) communiqué on Thursday said there was 100 per cent attendance by BBMP pourakarmikas in the West and East zones, 95 per cent in the South Zone, while no problems were reported from the new zones.

However, the BBMP officials admitted there were some problems at the dumping yards, especially in Mandur, because of the heavy rain.
A senior official told The Hindu 285 lorries carrying around 3,000 tonnes of waste, had been sent to the landfills.
“However, the clearing may be affected on Friday if the rain continues on Thursday night,” the official added.
