Police outpost ransack case: Cases filed against many persons

Cases have been registered by the Vemagal police against more than 100 persons in connection with the ransacking of a police outpost at Narasapur on Monday night. A mob attacked the outpost following the suicide by Manjunath, a Dalit youth. His relatives alleged that Manjunath committed suicide due to police harassment.

Manjunath, against whom a rowdy-sheet was opened following a protest at a private company where he was working, reportedly hanged himself after returning from jurisdictional Vemagal police station. He had gone to the station to appear for monthly interrogation. The mob placed the body of Manjunath in front of the outpost and later ransacked it.

Cases have been filed in connection with trespass, loss to government property, obstruction to government employees from discharging duties and abusing the staff, said Divya Gopinath, Superintendent of Police. A team of senior officials has been formed to investigate the matter. Measures will be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents, she added.

Though cases have been registered, no one has been arrested yet, Vemagal sub-inspector Lakshminarayan told

The district unit of Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) had criticised the practice of opening rowdy-sheets against those involved in industrial disputes.
