It was a lesson outside of the classroom for high school children on Saturday as they were given a glimpse of the green wealth at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden.

They fired a volley of questions on the usefulness of the trees in the city's biggest lung space, the number of species and their applications in various fields.

Know Your Plants and Trees, a programme organised for high school students and teachers by Lal Bahadur Mountaineering Institute, in association with the Horticulture Department, saw the participation of 30 students from R.V. Girls High School, Jain Vidyalaya, Sri Saraswathi Vidya Mandir and Vasavi Vidyaniketan.

During the two-hour programme, children were told of the importance of biodiversity by Rukmini, Principal of Malli Training Centre, a horticulture training point.

“Students gain practical experience here, more than what they learn sitting in the classroom,” said Deputy Director of Horticulture M. Jagadeesh.

Asked about her impression, Kaamaakshi of R.V. Girls High School said: “We learnt a lot about trees and plants that we had never known before.”
