A lecturer of Mount Carmel Pre University College was allegedly assaulted on Wednesday by a crowd comprising parents seeking seats for their children and representatives of student unions.
The parents’ grouse was that their children were allotted seats in the first round during the last week of May.
But they were unable to pay the fees within the stipulated time as it was too short a period, they alleged.

On Tuesday, the college announced the second list, in which names of such students were missing.
This raised tempers on Wednesday with parents staged a protest in front of the college, along with members of student organisations, urging the management to allow them to pay the fee and complete the admission.
One of the affected students said, “We did not have adequate funds to pay the fees. My father had to borrow the amount. But by the time we went to college, they told us it was too late. The college keeps a window of only two-and-a-half hours to complete admissions on one particular day, which is too short a period.”

Principal Sr. Ashwini said that parents were expected to pay fees within the stipulated time as there is a huge waitlist.
She denied that the students were given only a few hours to pay.
“We have made note of specific cases of students who have approached us stating that they are unable to pay the fees. In such cases, we have told them that we can take a look at their applications once the second list admissions are completed,” she said.
The college filed a police complaint regarding the assault.
