Metro, BMTC see surge in ridership on New Year’s eve

Namma Metro’s services till 2 a.m on January 1 saw thousands of passengers travelling to the city’s party hotspots by train.

The timings were extended on both the Purple and the Green lines and trains were operated at a frequency of 30 minutes post 10 p.m.

According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), 34,853 riders used the Metro between 10 p.m on December 31 and 2 a.m on January 1, on both lines, earning a revenue of around ₹5.59 lakh.

The Purple line, which connects Mysuru Road and surrounding areas to M.G Road and Indiranagar, witnessed the maximum rush with 33,106 passengers travelling post 10 p.m and a total of 1.26 lakh riders on Saturday.

The Green Line, between Nagasandra and Sampige Road station, saw 1,747 passengers post the normal operating hours of 11 p.m and a total of 49,736 passengers through the day.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, which operated buses from M.G Road towards areas like Kadugodi, Sarjapura, Electronics City, Bannerghatta National Park, Kengeri, Janapriya Township, Nelamangala, Yelahanka Upanagara, R.K. Hegde Nagar, Bagalur and Hoskote, saw around 10,000 passengers using the services.

The total revenue earned was ₹2.5 lakh between 10 p.m and 2 a.m. A total of 12 routes were operated with a frequency of 10 minutes, officials said.
