The fee fixation committee appointed by the government has submitted a report recommending a hike for MBBS and BDS courses for the 2016-17 academic year. This will apply to the 85% of students that private colleges, who have refused to give government-quota seats, propose to take by NEET. However, the government is still trying to bring 700 seats back in its quota.
Sources in the Medical Education Department said the committee had gone by the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions Act 2006 and fixed different fees for private colleges based on the infrastructure and faculty, among other criteria. The committee, headed by Justice R. Gururajan, is said to have suggested an increase in the existing fee. As per the consensual agreement, the annual fee for a government-quota seat in a private college was to be Rs. 62,000. The government is yet to decide on the validity of the report in the present circumstances.
As it stands today, members of the Karnataka Professional College Foundation have declared that there will be no government-quota seats.Minister of State for Medical Education Sharan Prakash R. Patil, who is yet to see the report, said, “We are trying to persuade private colleges to give government-quota seats.” A meeting with minority medical colleges as well as deemed universities has been convened on Friday. The government has decided to take the legal route if talks fail.
