Karnataka Home Minister K.J. George

The State Government on Monday said it is ready to give the lottery scam to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for further investigation.

Home Minister K.J. George told presspersons here that the government will write to the ED asking it to conduct the probe if the scam spread to other States.

"ED on its own can investigate inter-State scams. It does not require our permission to take up the case," Mr. George said.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was probing the case, in its preliminary report on the lottery scam mentioned the involvement of only Inspector-General of Police Alok Kumar. The CID report has not mentioned names of other police officers or IPS officers, Mr. George said.

Following the CID report, the government has suspended Alok Kumar, a 1994 batch IPS officer posted as Additional Commissioner of Police (West) in the city.

Replying to a question, Mr. George said Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala has sought information from the government on the issue. The government will give him the report.

Ruling out a CBI probe into the scam now, he said, "the CID is efficient to probe the scam in detail. All those indulged in the scam, either the police or politicians will not be spared." Further action would be taken based on the final report of the CID, he said.

The CID has been asked to submit the final report as early as possible. The interim report of the CID has not mentioned the amount involved in the lottery racket, the Home Minister said.
