Special enforcement drive across city from June 21

Faced with increasing air pollution in the city, various agencies have decided to launch a drive from June 21 to ensure that all vehicle users possess ‘Pollution Under Control’ certificates for their vehicles.

In a co-ordination committee meeting on Thursday, officials representing the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Bangalore City police, Transport Department and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) discussed various methods to combat rising air pollution.

“It was pointed out that vehicles are contributing to the increasing air pollution level and it was decided to hold a special enforcement drive for checking the same. Those vehicles caught without the proper certificates or not meeting pollution norms will be caught and fined,” a Transport Department official said.

A statement from KSPCB asked vehicle owners to keep their vehicle documents handy as they were liable to be checked in the coming days. In May 2016, air quality index scores across most monitoring stations in the city were in the 100-162 range which can cause breathing discomfort to people with lung, heart disease and among children and older adults according to KSPCB.
