To check for unaccounted water by tracking unauthorised and illegal connections, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) officials have commenced a survey of water connections across the city.
BWSSB Engineer-in-Chief T. Venkataraju said officials will conduct a door-to-door inspection of connections from December 15 to find out if the consumer had followed the prescribed specifications with regard to the size of underground sump and the pipelines.
“The engineers have been directed to inspect all buildings in their subdivisions to ascertain if the connection is legal. We have found several consumers with RR numbers drawing water from pipelines not connected to the meter,” he said.

“The engineers have been asked to collect details such as the size of the sump, RR number, whether the consumer has a borewell or a borewell connection and number of connections for every meter.”
Penalty
Violators will have to cough up a hefty penalty or three years imprisonment or both as per the BWSSB Act, he said, asking consumers to compulsorily get metered connections.

Earlier in the week, two residential buildings in Jayanagar and Hoskerehalli were found with illegal connections. “Supply to these buildings has been disconnected and the owners served notices. They will be penalised after the amount is calculated,” Mr. Venkataraju said.
