Accusing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the state government of not actively trying to solve the city’s garbage problems, members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hurled bags of garbage into the civic body’s head office on Saturday.

Anticipating the stir by AAP, the BBMP authorities had locked both gates – Vokkaliga Bhavan side and Unity Building side. However, AAP members hurled the garbage bags over the locked gates.

Nearly 40 members of the state unit of AAP were on their way to the BBMP headoffice on N.R. Square here when the police detained them. “After a few of our volunteers were detained, we broke up into smaller groups and decided to carry out our protest,” said a volunteer, on condition of anonymity. The volunteer also said that a few community members from Mandur were also participating in the protest.

After the members threw in the garbage, a few of them went in for a meeting with the city Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy. BBMP sources said that while Mr. Reddy was trying to convince the AAP members of the efforts taken by the civic body to solve the crisis, the volunteers remained unconvinced.

“We are still waiting for our leaders to decide on the next course of action, as most of our volunteers have been detained by the police," said a volunteer.
