Zest for green cause to the fore

The ideal world is a happy green where sustainable development is not just a concept, but a way of living. The striking colours that poured across the canvas sheets described such an ideal green world in many creative imageries underlining the need for environmental protection.

Armed with paints and paintbrushes, the 300-odd school students donned the role of artists for the day at the poster design contest organised jointly by Essar and The Hindu at Andhra University on the occasion of Earth Day on Tuesday.

A hand holding a patch of green with chirpy birds and trees, green fields with gushing streams navigating through the cities and thought-provoking images of a ‘dark future’ with skyscrapers and electricity poles sans the greens were some of the posters that were created by the little minds.

The competition was held in two categories – juniors (classes 4 to 7) and seniors (classes 8 to 10).

Prof. V. Ramesh of Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University, who was the judge for the contest, said visual impact was one of the key elements that made a poster or a painting striking. “You should ask yourself that if the painting, put up on a public space, will grab attention. On many occasions, we tend to over explain the concept. But in the visual medium, you should let the images speak for themselves,” he said.

The prizes were given away to the winners by VUDA Vice Chairman N. Yuvraj. Addressing the students, he stressed the need for replenishment of natural resources and the importance of tree plantation.

K. Sreeram Murthy of AP Pollution Control Board spoke on the role of students on environmental protection. S. Ramakrishna Rao, Director – CPC, Gitam University, and T.V. Suresh, Regional General Manager, , were among those present.

In the juniors’ category, first prize was bagged by P. Jyothi Swaroop, second prize went to P. Hema Chandra and third prize was given to P. Noothan Kumar. In the seniors’ category, first prize was bagged by Ankit Kumar Sahoo, second prize went to Preeti Sah and third prize was given to K. Sudheer Kumar.
