Following reports that the YSR Congress is likely to sweep the by-elections held on Tuesday in the State, the city unit of the party is expecting large-scale enrolment of new members in the coming days.
“However, we will not admit any ‘big' leaders from other parties. Only ward-level leaders and political activists will be preferred,” YSRCP city convenor Vamsikrishna Srinivas told The Hindu on Wednesday. He claimed that there had been several requests for enrolment in the recent times but they could not be obliged immediately as the party leaders were busy during the last couple of months -- first with the by-election in Kovvur of Nellore district and later the bypolls to 18 Assembly and one Lok Sabha seats held on Tuesday. The enrolment would begin from this weekend, he said.
Replying to questions, he said that people in the State were keen on seeing YSRCP president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy as Chief Minister at least for once. On the numerous cases filed against him, he said they were all ‘foisted'.

The party cadres' mood was upbeat as there were indications of a clean sweep in the bypolls. “We will win all the 18 Assembly and the Lok Sabha seat. It may be slightly tough in Parakal and Tirupati but nevertheless they will win. We will bag the Payakaraopeta (SC) seat with a majority of 10,000 to 15,000 votes,” he stated.
He also denied the claims that the YSRCP was strong only in the rural areas but weak in urban pockets and said the sentiment was the constant factor all over the State.
