A student, all of maybe 20 years, explains with clear logic that a website for blood donors should be light and designed for the users with low bandwidth.

“Those requiring blood would be under stress and panicky. It is essential that any website serving them needs to have minimum navigation for search and the result should be generated more or less instantaneously,” A.N. Murthy, Varma, and Sekhar of Aditya Institute of Technology and Management, Tekkali, Srikakulam district, explained.

Their project bagged them the first prize at the web designing contest organised by the Chaitanya Engineering College in association with the Millennium Software Solutions Limited and DQ Labs, here on Friday.

What was interesting was that, nearly all of the 30-odd websites developed by students of engineering colleges in the region that were sent to the contest were well thought out and exhibited concern for others in society. Further, the students were able to justify their work to the probing judges, who included faculty from the college, from other colleges, and professionals.

The focus of the students was on social work that was possible within the limitations of the fact that they were dependents and could not be expected to be spending money.

Realism, coupled with the needs of different sections of society, including students, were amply evident in the subjects — one was an attempt to set up an online practice tests, another was on educating people on sanitation, greenery, and so on. There were many that tried to put up a database on blood donors. Further, the students put their heart into mastering the different website building tools to give their projects a professional look and feel. Principal of Chaitanya Engineering College Kommadi M Ramjee, CEO of Millennium Software Solutions Sridhar Reddy, and Ravinder of DQ Labs were impressed by the dedication of the students who came from as far as Rajahmundry and Srikakulam to participate in the competition.

M.B.V. Sravya and team of GIET, Rajahmundry, came second and Iswarya and team of Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering for Women, Visakhapatnam, came third.
