Time running out for obtaining fitness certificate for school buses

May 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

With less than four weeks to go for reopening of schools, only 62 of the 1,570 school and college buses in the city and district have approached the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) till date for obtaining the mandatory fitness certificate (FC).

Of these, only 12 buses have been issued the FC. The remaining have been rejected for non-compliance with the 185 G of the AP Motor Vehicle Rules.

“We are taking photographs of the violations like: nail jutting out of seat cushions, missing fire extinguishers and First Aid boxes to produce them as documentary evidence,” Deputy Transport Commissioner G. Krishnaiah said on Thursday. “A few educational institutes in the city are operating AC buses and they have no emergency doors. The managements have, however, provided hammers in the buses to break the glass in case of an emergency,” he said. In all, 50 drivers and transport in-charges of educational institutes attended the meeting convened by the DTC.
