To motivate residents of the city to own up their environment and keep it clean and healthy, a group of visiting students painted a section of the wall of the Visakha Government Degree College for Women on the Jail Road here on Sunday.

Responding to the plea of the college principal, Swecha — an organisation working for promoting free and open source software — volunteered to take up the task and scheduled it for Sunday. Engineering students from other cities who were here to attend the 10-day industry-oriented training camp organised by the Swecha took up the task.

At around 9.15 a.m., a group of over 30 students from IIIT-Nuzvid, IIIT-Gwalior, KL University, and RVR and JC College, Guntur, along with a few local volunteers, started whitewashing the wall and painted a few inspirational messages on it.

“We have decided to pick up messages that would be appropriate for an educational institution,” Swecha’s Andhra Pradesh regional head G.V.S. Giri said.

“We have received a lot of encouragement from the GVMC Commissioner. We have already cleaned up and repainted the bus stand near LIC building. We are trying to cover as much of the city as possible,” said Swecha’s city coordinator A.V.S. Kalyan. For details, contact Giri on phone number 8008503613 or Kalyan on phone number 9966119507.
