September 30, 2011 12:53 pm | Updated 12:53 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The district committee of CPI (M) welcomed the order of the High Court on Thursday granting status quo on the 2,300 acres of land being acquired by the government in Nakkapalli mandal in the district for setting up industries.

Party's district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao wanted the government to honour the sentiments of farmers in view of the High Court order and stop acquiring land forcibly. It was a victory for farmers, he said.

Justice E. Rohini of High Court issued the order on a writ petition No. 27147 filed by the farmers of Nakkapalli.

Mr. Narasinga Rao said that following the High Court order acquisition of land being done at a fast pace for the US-based Brighton Energy Limited to set up a unit to produce forged steel components, which would be used in nuclear power plants, the captive port for Anrak aluminium factory, and for many other industries would be stopped immediately.

He recalled that farmers had expressed opposition after the State government issued notices under Sec. 4(1) for acquisition of land last year and when the district administration issued a notification under Sec. 6 through newspaper advertisements that the lands would be acquired, the farmers approached the High Court.
