The dismissed CISF constable Neeraj Kumar who allegedly committed many offences in the city and outskirts with his associates, including a double murder, and fired at policemen to escape from being taken into custody, is from a good family from Uttar Pradesh and son of a former sarpanch.
Twenty-nine-year-old Neeraj Kumar alias Tinku is from Baaju village in Prabhuddanagar district, joined the CISF in 2001 and worked at Adilabad first and then at the port from 2005 to 2009. He did not want to leave Visakhapatnam when he was transferred to Raichur and stayed back. He was dismissed for not honouring the transfer order.
Neeraj Kumar sent his family back to his village and impressed his parents and others that he was still with CISF. He would bring youngsters from his village and resort to offences with them in the city.

Commissioner of Police J. Purnachandra Rao said at a press conference, that Neeraj's father had not tried to shield his son but provided all help to the police. The villagers had also given a lot of support and the sarpanch of Lohar Rajnath Singh had provided food and transport for the police team from the city and also talked to the witnesses.
A team lead by Inspector S. Appala Raju investigated the case. The accused had left their helmet and slippers at the place of crime in Gajuwaka. The tracking of mobile phones snatched by them had proved to be a crucial point in investigation. Two youths who had purchased the stolen mobiles at a shop in Dabagardens extended a lot of support in the investigation. Checkposts set up by the police had forced the accused to leave their weapons in a bush near Sagarnagar.
The police team consisting of constables D.I. Jaikumar, P. Venkata Rao, P. Lakshmana Rao, N. Appala Raju, B. Kumar, K. Ravikiran and Home Guard Murali along with the two youths Durga Prasad and Santosh were given cash awards.
