To mark the International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer on September 16, environmental activists from the region are planning a series of events to increase awareness on the need to protect environment.
City-based environmentalists are planning a massive walk on the Beach Road on September 15, Sunday, to spread awareness on the need to adopt sustainable lifestyles. A signature campaign would also be organised where a large number of youth and children are expected to attend. The focus is on youth as they are the ones who would inherit this earth, the activists told mediapersons here on Sunday after releasing a poster on the subject.
With the polyester flex boards having caught the popular imagination a lot of energy and resources are being spent on these potential bio-hazards. The non-biodegradable flex boards are dumped in public spaces after the event is over leading to accumulation of hazardous wastes which clog the natural channels and through leaching contaminate the ground water resources. Youth and children would be made aware of the potential hazard as a part of the campaign.

The campaign would try to dissuade the children and youth from using potentially hazardous material like plastic bottles, and other daily use items that we take for granted. The programme aims to increase awareness on hazards of increased use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture and artificial sweeteners in soft drinks, among others.
There is a need to educate the consumers on the need to switch over to using environmentally friendly items, activists of the Green Youth Brigade said.

Pratap of Centurion University, S Indraja, S Suryakala, Abhishek Pal, Rapaka Manohar, G Devi, G Nagamurali, V Harikumar, Dhananjaya, Ramaprabha and J Rajeswari of Green Youth Brigade, and a number of public minded democrats were present.
