Striking sanitation workers on Monday laid siege to the GVMC office leading to a tense situation and arrest of leaders and workers.

The workers of GVMC Employees’ Union, affiliated to CITU, took out a big rally from LIC Building to the GVMC office and laid siege to it as a part of the protest on the third day of their strike. They were demanding that the State government issue orders on an agreement reached in October last and minimum wages of Rs.12,500.

As the protest continued for more than two hours, the police arrested leaders Subba Rao and Venkat Reddy and around 400 workers. Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana said the services of 2,500 permanent workers would be better used to tackle the worsening sanitation.
