Rich tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day by various organisations in the city on Friday.
Director (Finance) of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant T.V.S. Krishna Kumar garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and recalled his contribution to the freedom struggle. At a separate programme organised at Ukkunagaram, over 1,000 children of 10 schools participated. Director (Personnel) G.B.S. Prasad told the students that the purpose of organising the programme was to remember the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters. Founder president of Lakshya Foundatoin Anuradha Prabhudesai made a presentation on Kargil War and the sacrifices made by our soldiers under arduous conditions. Children of primary classes of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Malkapuram, presented a drama to highlight the importance of value education. A senior dental surgeon of KGH K. Nageswara Rao garlanded a portrait of Mahatma at a programme organised by the Bala Vikas Foundation at BVF Bridge School near the Fishing Harbour.

At a programme organised at GITAM University, its Chancellor K. Ramakrishna said that a smart city cannot be defined by skyscrapers and mechanical pursuit of materialism, but by implementing the ideals of Gandhiji. He said that in the name of urbanisation, rural life was being destroyed.
University’s Vice-Chancellor G. Subrahmanyam, Registrar M. Potharaju, Institute of Pharmacy Principal Ganapathi and Centre for Gandhian studies Assistant Director B. Nalini participated in the programme. The Chancellor also released the Swachch Bharat campaign material developed by Rotaract Club of GITAM University.
