August 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 06:15 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The problem with regard to ensuring faster evacuation of cargo at Visakhapatnam Port due to short-supply of rakes causing congestion may come to an end with a top official of East Coast Railway promising to take prompt action.

During his discussions with Visakhapatnam Port Chairman, Deputy Chairman and others during his one-day visit on Saturday, ECoR General Manager Rajiv Vishnoi promised to solve the problem raising hopes among the stakeholders on the rake problem they have been facing for a long time.

As against the requirement of 20 rakes, the railway is able to supply just half, leading to detention of various cargoes handled at the port. This was causing disappointment among the port users and stevedores as delay in evacuation of the cargo adds to the cost.

The issue was earlier taken up by local MP K. Haribabu following which Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had promised to solve the problem. During the presentation, the port officials also briefed Mr. Vishnoi on the ongoing expansion activity of the port and their rake requirement to cater to the demand to ensure quicker evacuation of cargo. During her first visit after taking charge, DRM Chaqndralekha Mukherjee also met the stakeholders to study the issue.
