The city police, intensifying their campaign against use of dark films on car windows and windshields as per the directive of the Supreme Court, launched a special drive to remove all such films from vehicles other than those having ‘Z’ and ‘Z plus’ categories.
Commissioner of Police J. Purnachandra Rao launched the special drive by removing the film from some of the private vehicles passing by at Siripuram junction on Friday.
He explained to the car owners that the Supreme Court had issued clear directives against use of any kind of film on car glasses.

The Apex court, in its judgment, had clarified that visual light transmission limits (VLT) of 70 per cent on the front and rear and 50 per cent on the side windows was applicable only to the glass manufactured with the tint. The court explicitly banned use of black film or any other material upon the safety glass, side glass, even if it conforms to the VLT limits.
The vehicles being used by persons with Z and Z plus categories may use such films provided a high-level committee cleared it and gave a written permission, the Police Commissioner explained.
The city police held a meeting with car décor providers as part of the campaign. The police had been directed by the Apex court to not only challan the violator, but also remove the film from the vehicle, Mr. Purnachandra Rao said. RTO Vivekananda Reddy, ADCP (Traffic) V. Suresh Babu, traffic inspector D. Rajeswara Rao, and III Town inspector K. Lakshmana Murthy were present.
