‘Patients vulnerable to hospital fires’

Most of them do not know how to contain them, says health varsity V-C

Former Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas speaking at a seminar on 'fire safety in hospitals' on Saturday.

The speakers at the inaugural of a two-day seminar on: “Hospital fire and safety system, standards, implementation and evacuation measures in case of exigency”, here on Saturday highlighted the need to have stringent fire safety measures in hospitals in view of the vulnerability of patients during fire mishaps.

The seminar is being organised by the Fire and Security Association of India (FSAI), Visakhapatnam chapter, in association with the AP State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department (FSD).

Former Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas, who inaugurated the seminar, said the existence of rules and regulations for implementation of fire safety norms was not enough. There should be a will on the part of people to follow them.

Dr. C.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, said patients, staff and attendants would be vulnerable to fire mishaps but none of them know how to contain fires.
