Open drain vexes residents

For pedestrians as well as motorists, particularly two-wheelers drivers, the uncovered drain on the Raja Rammohan Roy Road at Velampeta continues to be a veritable trap.

For nearly six to eight months now, the drain has remained without slabs covering it. During the period, two cars fell into the drain. With the front portion of the car crashing into the drain, the vehicles came to a grinding halt. Local people shouldered the burden by physically lifting them out.

Velampeta in the One Town area generally gets water-logged in the rainy season. Sometime ago, when Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar came to the area during his morning visits, residents protested against the bad shape of the drain and the problems it was causing them.

The Municipal Commissioner took the sanitary inspector to task and instructed him to repair the drain, said Gurunadh, a resident.

There appears to be some difficulty in repairing the drain. Residents say the stench from the drain is unbearable. After the Commissioner’s visit, sanitary workers are frequently clearing the drain, bringing some relief.

But a permanent solution would be laying the slabs.
