It plays key role in maintaining functional ability of people: expert

The role of physiotherapy should be extended to different branches of modern medicine other than orthopaedics, neurology, cardiovascular diseases and sports medicine. This underlines the need to highlight the scope of physiotherapy in various aspects of medicine, says EC member of the AP Physical Therapists Association P. Sai Charan Varma in connection with the World Physiotherapy Day being observed on September 8.

Physiotherapy plays a key role in maintaining the functional ability of people. Physiotherapists maintain the health of people of all ages, help patients manage pain and prevent disease. One can benefit from physiotherapy at any time for example, when experiencing back pain, recovering from injury and preparing for childbirth, says Dr. Varma.

In preventive services, physiotherapy services should be extended to post-natal care and geriatrics.

Quoting the WHO report, he says: “Ageing and health maintenance of functional ability has the highest importance for older people. By 2050, the global population would include 2 billion people aged 60 years and above”.

A free physiotherapy camp is being organised at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) on the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day on VIMS premises near Arilova on September 8.
