April 11, 2012 12:04 pm | Updated 12:04 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM

GVMC is proposing to set up a mechanised dobhighat with community participation under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The first such ghat is proposed on an experimental basis at Balayya Sastry Layout utilising the community participation fund (CPF) of the urban mission. While 90 per cent of the project cost will be borne by the Central and State Governments, 10 per cent has to be the contribution of the community.

Water purification plants and health and nutrition plants are the other projects that can be taken up under CPF.

At a meeting with representatives of washer-men associations on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu expressed concern over the pitiable working conditions of washer-men at storm water drains and on the road-side which he observed during his visits.

He said 500 persons were washing one lakh clothes at a mechanised dobhighat at Malleswaram in Bangalore. He offered to send some washer-men to Bangalore for training.

The washer-men representatives wanted the GVMC to set up the mechanised ghats at one or two places. Secretary Narayana said the Rs.8 lakh already sanctioned for a dobhighat at Balayya Sastry Layout should be used for the machinery.
