District Collector J. Syamala Rao on Thursday instructed all concerned to respond to the Dalit-related cases promptly and initiate steps that would create confidence among them.
Addressing a meeting of Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, he said such steps would embolden people to come forward and stand as witnesses. Delay in taking steps might dilute the case, he said. Besides taking prompt action against cases of untouchability, he wanted awareness camps to be organised in the village every third Saturday. Problematic village should be identified first for organising such camps.
Superintendent of Police Vineet Brijlal denied the contention of some that police had been trying to effect compromises in respect cases against upper caste people. Police have no authority to make compromises, he pointed out, adding that when a case was filed, action as per law would be initiated after a preliminary inquiry into the case. The department had always been alert in respect of Dalit-related cases, the SP asserted. Responding to a plea by a member, the SP assured to reopen the case filed by Lakkavaram village Dalits in Chodavaram mandal.

MVS Sarma, MLC, pointed out to the disgraceful ‘two tumblers’ practice in some interior villages and wanted action against such practice. He wanted the recommendations of Punnaiha Commission to be implemented.
Responding to the issues raised by members, the Collector instructed revenue officials to submit him reports within stipulated time. Araku legislator Siveri Somu and senior officials participated.
