When dusk falls over the city, there is an eerie silence surrounding Vivekananda Nagar. With the lack of public transport facilities in the area, residents returning back from workplaces and colleges find it difficult and safety concern is an issue. “Unless you have your own vehicle, getting here is very difficult. In the night, it becomes more difficult certain patches of bad roads,” said D. Shanti Sree, a resident of the locality. Busses ply only till Sagar Nagar and there is just one bus that connects Sagar Nagar to Yendada, but not one goes till Vivekananda Nagar.
Incidents of theft are not new to this place. Recently, a chain-snatching incident occurred outside one of the newly-built apartments in the colony. With many apartments still in the construction stages, security systems are yet to be installed and some flats don’t have night-time security guards.
Infrastructure-wise, not much development has taken place.

While good roads are lacking, street lighting is inadequate, there are hardly any stores or shopping complexes in the vicinity to cater to local requirements. The residents have to drive to Sagar Nagar, Madhurwada or Venkojipalem to fetch essential commodities such as vegetables and groceries. “In fact, we have to plan our week well in advance. Unless we stock up things for the week, there is no way that we can get anything in the neighbourhood in times of emergency,” said Shanti Sree. A small make-shift stall which keeps eggs and milk is the only one in the colony.
