EC takes suo motu cognisance, demands explanation

The Election Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s remark at a public meeting in Nandyal two days ago to “gun down Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on the road.”

It has directed Kurnool Collector S. Satyanarayana and Returning Officer for the Nandyal by-election Prasanna Venkatesh to forward a report.

The EC had sought a report on the remark by the Leader of the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, Mr. Satyanarayana told The Hindu on Saturday. Mr. Venkatesh said that on the EC’s directions, he had served a show-cause notice on Mr. Reddy, asking him for an explanation within 48 hours.

The Nandyal III Town police, meanwhile, have registered a case against Mr. Reddy on the charge of violating the model code of conduct.

On a complaint lodged by Kurnool Zilla Parishad chairman M. Rajasekhar Goud, a case was booked under Section 188 of the IPC (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (promoting enmity between classes during election), said Circle Inspector Devendra Kumar.
