Brain stroke is a devastating disease, which normally affects people over 60 years of age. But, of late, the incidence of young persons suffering brain stroke is on the rise, Dr. Siba Sankar Dalai, Senior Consultant – Interventional Neuro Radiologist, told a media conference here on Tuesday.

On June 14, Anvesh Varma (15), Intermediate student, was brought to the hospital with complaint that he was unable to move his right side of the body. On the next day, Shaik Imran (21), 3rd year engineering student, was brought with a complaint of sudden paralysis of the left half of his body.

Angiography of the brain (cerebral angiogram) was done on both the patients. “A thin catheter was navigated to the site in the block in the brain and mechanical thrombectomy was performed to remove the clots from the brain, thereby restoring normalcy in the blood circulation within minutes,” said Dr. Dalai.

Dr. R.V. Narayana and Dr. K. Suresh Kumar, neuro physicians, and Dr. V. Kuchela Babu and Dr. Mohan, interventionists were the other team members who treated the patients.

Dr. Dalai said rising stress levels among youngsters, sedentary lifestyle and change in food habits were responsible for growing incidence of brain stroke in young persons. The situation could be reversed, if the patient, was brought to a hospital, which has the required infrastructure and qualified doctors to treat brain stroke, within 24 hours after the stroke.
