More than 150 volunteers of the Bohra community took part in a cleanliness drive under the initiative of ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign at Suryabagh on Saturday. The campaign was kick-started across the country in 700 cities by the Burhani Foundation-India (BFI). “We chose Valentine’s Day to start the campaign so that people can realise their duties towards keeping surroundings clean and fall in love with cleanliness,” said Abizer Madraswala, a member of BFI.

The community organisation is involved in the promotion and awareness of civic hygiene, neighbourhood cleanliness and urban greenery. As part of this mission, the organisation adopted a colony in Yendada and pledged to keep the area clean and green.

During the cleanliness drive, members collected close to 100 bags of garbage and went around the busy area of Suryabagh to distribute posters that highlighted the cause of Swacch Bharat.

“We noticed that many people simply throw garbage from their balconies and litter the streets in their neighbourhood. We have spoken to them and urged them to not only join hands with us in our cleanliness campaign but also take extra efforts towards beautifying the neighbourhood by placing pots of plants,” Abizer said. The Bohra community plans to make it an ongoing campaign in its endeavour towards a cleaner city. As part of this, awareness campaigns will be carried out by community volunteers on the Beach Road.
