The Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) annual budget for 2013-14 has been approved with a surplus of Rs.81 crore, according to Principal Secretary Municipal Administration and Urban Development and Special Officer GVMC B.Sam Bob.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said the budget estimate for the new financial year has been approved at Rs. 2,062 crore and the expenditure was estimated at Rs.1,981 crore. The allocations for engineering was Rs.335 crore, Rs.174 crore for medical and health, Rs.165 crore for drinking water schemes and Rs.47 crore for education.
Encroachments of roads by traders and hawkers have robbed the city of its aesthetic look. Efforts will be made to rid the city of such encroachments and give a new look to the city, the GVMC special officer said.

All vegetable markets will be given a facelift and infrastructure facilities would be improved. There are 107 crematoriums in the city out of which only 30 have compound walls.
Within two years compound walls will be constructed for all the crematoriums in the city, he said.
The GVMC special officer promised to develop all the parks in the GVMC limits and provide basic amenities and improve infrastructure facilities. Watch and ward staff will be provided at all the parks.

The GVMC schools will be provided basic amenities like tables, chairs and even latrines. Mr. Sam Bob asked Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana and chief engineer B. Jayaram Reddy to develop the entire stretch of the beach road from R.K. Beach to Coastal Battery.
GVMC Commissioner and additional commissioners K. Ramesh and P.Poornachandra Rao, chief engineer Jayaram Reddy and UCD project director M.N.A. Patrudu were present.
