‘Fly ash bricks ensure quality too’

March 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Even as bricks made of fly ash help dispense with effluents from thermal plants, they provide better quality in construction. Those making the bricks can help produce construction material with less investment, speakers said at a programme here.

At the convention on “Utilisation of fly ash-environmental protection,” organised by NTPC, Group General Manager A K Samata said the Simhadri power plant generating 2,000 MW power was producing 10 lakh tonnes of fly ash. It was supplying the ash free of cost for several construction purposes. Ramco Cement Company was getting 3.3 lakh tonnes. The convention was part of a campaign to create awareness on fly ash utilisation.

Joint Chief Environmental Engineer of A P Pollution Control Board Madhusudhana Rao pointed out that the country was lagging behind in using industrial waste to reduce pollution when compared to Western countries.

Though the notification on fly ash utilisation was issued in 2009 it was not implemented in full. The notification laid down that all construction within 100 km radius must use fly ash-based material and bank loans must be extended to only such constructions.

CSIR retired scientist Mohini Saxena also spoke.
