“Nature has given us so much and we are gifted by it. Our prime responsibility should be to contribute to sustainable maintenance of ecosystem in the best possible manner. Every sphere of the planet is influenced by biodiversity and its extinction leads to irrevocable loss,” said Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju on Friday.
Experts came together to discuss various techniques and projects at the two-day national seminar on ‘Taxonomy for managing biodiversity: present scenario and future challenges’ being organised by PG Department of Biotechnology at Dr. V.S. Krishna Government College (Autonomous) (VSKGC) here. Delivering the keynote address, HoD of Biotechnology of the college S. Hara Sreeramulu said: “Unless a person is aware of taxonomy for managing biodiversity, contribution to its conservation becomes tough. The two-day session focuses on embracing the new techniques to conserve nature and enhance environmental awareness among student community.”
The national seminar, sponsored by UGC, saw resource persons briefing on the rising trend of industrial pollution and other lurking dangers that impact biodiversity beyond one’s imagination. Professor in Department of Botany of Nagpur University T. Srinivasu spoke on how plants render invaluable service to maintain ecological balance.

In line with the event, around 800 students from Departments of Life Sciences and Economics of VSKGC hosted an exhibition. The projects on display included colour diversity in fruits and vegetables that bring host of health benefits, advantages of using of organic manure for crops, value of tree, ozone cycle overview, medicinal values of leaves, and process of mushroom cultivation, among others. One can also view diverse range of pulses and grains showcased prettily in earthen containers by Sanjeevini Rural Development Society from Killoguda.
AU Rector E.A. Narayana, Principal of VSKGC V. Chandra Sekhar, HoD of Microbiology and Biochemistry of the college Y.V.K. Durga Prasad, among others participated in the college’s souvenir launch.
