The government’s announcement that a National Law University would be established in the State capital, which is yet to be decided, has received response from unexpected quarter.
Concerned over their fate if another National Law University comes up, students of Damodaram Sanjeevaiah National Law University here went on a strike from Friday seeking that the government strengthen their six-year-old institution or merge it with the proposed university.
The 550-plus students doing five-year LL.B., and some in LL.M. and Ph.D. programmes, went on strike and staged a demonstration near the institution premises in MVP Colony.

They are afraid that their institution might lose recognition it has been enjoying so far.
Most of the students are from outside the State, and they are more worried.
Some students pointed out that the decision to establish a new national law school had come after their university was brought under the Common Law Admission Test-2014 after the core committee of CLAT accorded provisional grant during its meeting on May 24.

When contacted, DSNLU Vice-Chancellor R.G.B. Bhagavath Kumar said there seemed to be no threat to the university and it was only apprehensions of the students. “This is a law institution established by an Act of the State Government and it has been working for the last six years. I have clarified it to them,” Prof. Bhagavath Kumar told The Hindu .
“The situation has been explained to HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and he is scheduled to meet Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu next week to present a vision document of the university. He would explain the latest developments to the Chief Minister,” the V-C said.
The law university comes under Law Minister and the Chief Minister.
