City set for uniform water supply timing

Networking of reservoirs will help GVMC store 14,000 KL of water

With the completion of two water schemes covering parts of the city water supply is expected to be streamlined with uniform timings for the entire city.

At present water supply is staggered and various parts of the city get it right from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. for 45 minutes to one hour. This is because of the lack of network of reservoirs, pumping mains, pump houses, pump sets etc.

The two schemes are taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (now wound up) cover the northeast part of the Central City and the One Town area.

The refurbishment of pipelines, extension of reservoirs and working on pumping mains etc is taken up at a cost of Rs.190 crore in the Northeast part and with Rs.48 crore in the One Town area.

“Now 90 per cent of the work is completed and the network of reservoirs will be in place by June. This will enable supply of water uniformly in the morning to the entire city, including Gajuwaka,” said sources in GVMC.

The networking of reservoirs once completed will help GVMC store 14,000 KL of water to introduce uniform timings for the city, sources said.

It will also enable giving 45,000 more new household connections. As of now, the city including Anakapalle and Bheemunipatnam has 1.6 lakh household service connections.

More storage reservoirs

An example of the benefit of having more storage reservoirs is illustrated in reducing the supply timings in Wards one and two of GVMC under Mudasarlova.

Besides 300 KL ground-level service reservoir a 600 KL elevated service reservoir has been inaugurated recently.

The necessary infrastructure for pumping was also put in place by officials.

Supply after pumping water to both the reservoirs has begun.

As a result the pressure has improved. “Instead staggered supply for nine hours earlier, at present it is completed in six hours,” said an official.

Once more storage reservoirs and other infrastructure are ready the issue of inadequate pressure will also be addressed and those at the tail-end of the system will also get sufficient water, say sources.
