Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) Activists laid siege to the city Collectorate on Thursday, demanding equal pay for equal work for contract and outsourced workers employed in works of permanent nature.
In a memorandum submitted to the CITU district collector, V. Seshadri, Greater Visakha Nagara Committee (GVNC) general secretary M. Jaggu Naidu and president P. Venkata Reddy noted that the minimum wages for workers employed in the GVMC, Autonagar, industrial estates, small industries, and shops and establishments, and 72 other scheduled employments should be fixed to ensure that they were not below Rs.10,000 a month, besides payment of Variable DA.
They noted that under the Contract Labour Abolition and Regularisation Act (1970), the contract system was not allowed in works of a permanent nature.

The Act was not being implemented by the Centre after 1991.
