Child marriage averted in Vizag

May 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Acting on a tip-off, the Child Rights Protection Forum averted a child marriage scheduled to be performed at Seetammadhara on May 10.

Forum’s city convener G. Seetaram, project director of Women and Child Welfare K. Chinmayee Devi, and Three Town CI B. Tirumala Rao visited a house where a bridal ritual was under way for a 13- year-old-girl, a student of class eight.

Mr. Seetaram said that S. A. Swamy, who works as a security guard in a private company, fixed the marriage of his daughter with a boy of Vizianagaram.

Ms. Chinmayee Devi and Mr. Seetaram counselled the parents of both the bride and the groom and took a written undertaking from them that they would not perform the marriage till the girl attained the age of 18.

This is the 15{+t}{+h}such marriage the Forum has prevented so far this year.
