BARC to set up biodegradable waste management plant

Official visits site of the proposed facility at Anakapalle

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Mumbai) will soon set up a ‘Misara Gruna biodegradable waste management plant’ at Anakapalle in the district.

This will be the first biodegradable waste management plant being set up with BARC collaboration in Andhra Pradesh.

Head (Technology Transfer) of BARC (Mumbai) Sharad P. Kale visited Anakapalle and inspected the site for the proposed plant. He held talks with officials of the Anakapalle Municipality.

“The plant at Anakapalle is planned to be set up in six months. Talks are being held with officials of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. A similar plant is being planned in Visakhapatnam ,” he told newsmen who met him here on Wednesday.

“Waste is not a waste, but a resource. We can return that resource to the environment by using this technology developed by BARC for setting up plants under ‘Aakruti’, the social initiative programme of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE),” he said. Around 140 plants have already been set in various municipalities in Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and at Surat (Gujarat). Allaying apprehensions that setting up waste management plants in thickly populated areas could inconvenience the public, Dr. Kale said these plants wouldn’t emanate foul smell as was being made out. He said the technology was used in such plants for the last eight years. Many of the plants were located in the heart of cities and there were no complaints so far.
