Air pollution has been found to be a major factor for cerebro-vascular and neuro-degenerative diseases worldwide, according to the World Federation of Neurology (WFN).
World Brain Day (WBD) is observed on July 22 to commemorate the formation of the WFN on that day in 1957. The day is, however, being observed since 2014 with a different theme each year to spread awareness relating to neurological disorders.
“Air pollution alone contributes to 30 per cent of brain stroke cases worldwide and since this a modifiable risk factor, governments should adopt stringent norms to check air pollution. Air pollution increases the risk of lung disorders and cardiac problems and they in turn can cause brain stroke,” according to Dr. Harsha Vardhan, neuro surgeon of Apollo Hospitals.

Dr. Harsha Vardhan said that pollutants in the atmosphere can directly affect the development of a child’s brain. A free consultation camp on orthopedics and neurosurgery was held at Apollo Hospital, Ramnagar, on Sunday to mark the day. About 200 persons were screened by ortho and neuro specialists at the camp.
