Widening of highway in city under way

May 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 03:01 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Road width will increase from 5 feet (at Sheelanagar) to 30 feet near the NHAI office

With the detailed project report (DPR) ready for the proposed Pendurti-Anandapuram six-lane highway, the GVMC has taken up widening of the existing highway passing through the city.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had instructed the District Collector and the Municipal Commissioner at a meeting three months ago that the National Highways Authority of India would take up the new road and the existing highway will have to be maintained by GVMC. Following it, widening of the road has begun.

Taking up the alternative highway has been a persistent demand to ease city traffic and also to help reduce accidents on the highway. Though the highway had been proposed and work awarded to an agency during the UPA Government, the proposal fell through with financial closure not taking in place.

“The widening will be taken up from Sheelanagar to near the National Highways Authority office near Venkojipalem for about 25 km. The work that had begun two months ago will be completed in another month,” sources in GVMC said.
