Students of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) schools, who received spectacles as part of the eye testing camp conducted under the aegis of Rajasthani Sanskritic Mandal (RSM), were all smiles as they tried the new spectacles at a programme organised here on Tuesday.
Spectacles were distributed to 174 children, who were screened at eye camps conducted in the past.
In his report on the activities of RSM, its treasurer Bijendar Kumar Gupta recalled the service activities taken up by the Mandal during the last four decades of its existence in the city. He said that the ‘free eye testing camp’ to screen 28,000 students of 158 GVMC Schools was taken up with the cooperation of Visakha Eye Hospital Trust (VEHT) and District Blindness Control Society (DBCS).

He said that the eye camp project was launched on July 21, this year. Volunteers of RSM and doctors of VEHT visited all the 158 schools and screened the students. After screening in different phases, the doctors had finalised 221 students, who required spectacles and 179 students, who needed medicines to improve their eye sight. A total of nine students were identified for eye surgeries. Spectacles were distributed to 47 identified students in September this year. Dr. I. Venkata Rao checked the vision of the students. Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao distributed the spectacles to the beneficiaries. RSM president Chandmal Agarwal was present.
