Protesting against the State government not holding election to the GVMC which has been long overdue CPI(M) and CPI will observe a ‘satyagraha’ at the Gandhi statue here on February 24.
The TDP government had gone back on its promise during the general elections that if it came to power municipal election would be held in 100 days, CPI district secretary A.J. Stalin, CPI(M) city secretary B. Ganga Rao and former corporator Botta Eswaramma said here on Monday.
Not holding elections for five years was undermining democracy at local body level, they said adding the election was being denied deliberately to get things done without any hitch.

Even the petition in High Court was filed by a TDP leader and it could be withdrawn if the government really wanted to hold elections, Mr. Ganga Rao and Mr. Stalin said.
Since elections were held to the five panchayats which were proposed to be merged in GVMC, it was no longer an issue, the leaders said.
Alternately, elections could be conducted for the erstwhile 72 wards and the merger of Bhimunipatnam and Anakapalle could be effected later, Mr. Ganga Rao said.
